Massachusetts; Supreme Court

From the inbox:
Like athletes, we have to be able to change directions quickly in politics --  you never know what's coming next. (The Supreme Court decision had been in the works for some time, and the corporate-friendly outcome was predicted by Common Cause among others -- given the current makeup of the Court -- but there was nothing that could be done to change it.)

MASSACHUSETTS:

We never had 60 votes in the Senate without crippling compromise (Joe Lieberman???), so we might be better off learning to get some more substantial things done without a few of them.

Obama is always getting unsolicited advice, but this might be worth listening to (but not the headline writer -- a bit overwrought):

SUPREME COURT:

In the face of the astounding 5-4 decision by the right-wingers that dominate the Supreme Court, several things have been suggested that we can do to try to offset the additional corporate millions certain to flow into campaigns (they already had PACs to funnel money in):

(1) Ramp up grassroots activity. Support of candidates by enough volunteers (not only contributing but also canvassing, phone-banking, etc.) can take the place of much paid advertising.
(2) Find chinks in the Supreme Court decision where legislation still can affect the behavior of corporations -- rules on disclosure of the source of the money, etc.
(3) Push for public funding of Congressional campaigns -- the Fair Elections Now Act (here are the basics;  and here is a summary).

The following comment is a bit more out on the edge, but he makes a good point about the fact that the corporate form often is used to hide who's behind it -- that is, where the money is coming from:
