New Georgia Immigration Law Is One of Toughest in Nation

The law takes effect July 1. Already, civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Southern Poverty Law Center, say they are considering lawsuits against Georgia. Business groups, including the state Chamber of Commerce, have raised fears that the law will diminish tourism. In Arizona and Utah, court injunctions have delayed carrying out the laws while their constitutionality is determined.

One of the Georgia law’s authors, Matthew L. Ramsey, a Republican state legislator, said the measure was written to withstand legal challenges. Lawmakers set clear guidelines on when the police are allowed to request a suspect’s immigration status, he said. The law allows state and local police officers to request immigration documentation from criminal suspects and, if they do not receive it, to take the suspects to jails, where federal officials could begin the deportation process.

“States don’t have the legal authority to deport. We don’t have the legal authority to secure our borders,” Mr. Ramsey said. "But our goal is, within a constitutional framework, to eliminate incentives for illegal aliens to cross into our state."

The law also creates stricter requirements for businesses hiring workers and harsher punishments for anyone who harbors or employs an illegal immigrant. There are 425,000 illegal immigrants in Georgia, the seventh most of any state, the Pew Hispanic Center estimates. Two other Southern states, Alabama and South Carolina, are also considering similar immigration bills that are expected by many experts to pass this year.

Tom Smith, a finance professor at Emory University, said Georgia businesses were bracing for the impact. Some studies suggest that that Arizona’s law has cost the state as much as $250 million in convention business, he said.

“People are looking at the history in Arizona and thinking, ‘Could a law in Georgia could have the same impact?’ ” Professor Smith said. “We’re waiting to see whether that will happen in Georgia now.”

One quote earlier struck me. "Mr. Deal, a Republican, said he would have preferred a comprehensive immigration overhaul from the federal government."  If this is true he might want to tell that to his party.  The Republican party--specifically the base of the party, which is now most often called the "Tea Party"--has been the reason we have not seen comprehensive immigration reform.

  1. I hope all mexican will go home and leave America on its knee. We are so arrogant in thinking that we have the right to harrass these poor people who just want to make a living in our great country. We should be welcoming them with open arm and help them become Americans just like our fore fathers.

  2. To the people so gong ho about the boarder safty. I don't think it was the mexicans who knock down the twin towers. You have been trick by your government to think that they actually care about your safty. They are using the illegal immigrants as a punch line to get elect or re elect to their office so they can creat a country full of dummies who can't think for themselves. Don't blame the legal or illegal immigrants becuase you are too lazy to work, or you choose not to do certain work. Don't beat up the illegals to make yourselves feel good. We are all illegal immigrants. The only legal residents in America are the American indians. Please take the time and ask any indian what they think about our government.I sure hope the Mexicans don't use the same tactics that our government use to take the land away from the indians on us now. They can use the excuse that god told them to do it, or they are concern for our safety. Or they can just take the country from us and come up with the reason later. Whatever the reason, we should look for better solutions to so;ve this issue.for I am so mad about this and I can't think straight. If what I typed this somewhat rambled, please ubderstand that I am just venting. I am not a patriot, but I do love this country. I don't have to be a patriot to love this country. I just don't like that some of the people in this country trying to blame all the problem that we caused ourselves on most of these hard working people. You know I am right. They work so hard and they don't deserve the treatment they are getting from Arizona and Georgis. Nathan Deal don't care about anyone else but the people in and around Atlanta. and that witch governor in Arizona never have to lift a fonger in her entire life. oh, the only reason Nathah Deal care about you people in ATL is for your vote . Period!!!!!!

  3. I am so mad that I have to keep going. Why is it now we have such a big problem with Mexicans?????? Is it because they are the reason that we are in reccession? Is it because they did a horrible job on harvesting our crops? Is it the sloppy job on the yards? Is it the un sound construction project that they help on? Is it the bad service they give in restaurants? Is it because the money they work so hard for were send to their home to sustain their families??Is it because they pick a fight in the middle east for oil???? Is it because they used up little bit of health care funds so the sorry people who are americans loose their share of the free money and free food and free everything?????? I have been in this country for over 35 years, and I 've never have a friend or anyone I know call me and said>" I just got fired because they replaced me with an illegal alien. What is going on here. I just don't understand it. Will someone please explain all this to me?
