Some news on the transit frot...

A reader sent me some updates on the transit front...

At last month's MARTA meeting Michael Tyler was elected to the new MARTA Board Chairman.

MARTA's 30th Anniversary Transportation Summit, which featured such luminaries as Congressman John Lewis, the Atlanta Regional Commission's new Chairman Tad Leithead, and former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell. Leithead was very supportive of the need to expand transit. Much of the discussion involved efforts to get funding legislation out of the General Assembly. Atlanta transit riders could face MARTA service cuts of 25-30% unless something is done.

The newly formed Regional Transit Commitee -- a successor to the Transit Planning Committee and the Transit Implementation Committee -- will hold its first meeting at 1:30 Jan. 15 at ARC headquarters. It will work on turning the "Concept 3" plan to expand Atlanta transit into reality. It could someday become its own agency, something like Chicago's Regional Transit Authority.

Transit Day at the Capitol is Feb 18.

There is a Sierra Club MARTA transit pub crawl, on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Georgia Conservation Voters have made transit one of their top issues for the new legislative session.
---------

As a general by the by I hope that the House passes SB 120, supporting MARTA funding flexibility, and that the house and senate agree on legislation that would allow counties to join together to form Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax districts to fund transportation.

I need your help...

Help keep me and my readers up to date on any news/articles/or tips during the upcoming session; be it transit or any other issue...

Help us aggregate and get information to citizens so that they can stay informed and updated on issues facing this state.

I'm certain to be doing a whole lot of outsourcing to readers (and maybe recruit another blogger??)...
