Pot goes FAST

Drugs in the FAST Lane

To speed the flow of commerce across its northern and southern borders, the United States government created a program after the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks known as FAST, for Free and Secure Trade.

It turns out that the so-called trusted shipper program, which allows prescreened companies to move their products across the border more quickly, may not be as secure as it sounds.

This month alone, Customs and Border Protection officers stationed in Laredo, Tex., have recovered nearly three tons of marijuana and just over $1 million in cash in trucks crossing from Mexico to the United States — all of them enrolled in the FAST program.
