bible verse of the day

“Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”- Galatians 6:2

Something about this reminds me about why I am involved in community organizing and politics as a whole. We have to take care of each other--its our duty. When we nurture our communities we nurture our own lives and add meaning and beauty to our days. We have to take care of each other in our actions and in our policy.

  1. "We have to take care of each other--its our duty."

This statement give me the chills. It leaves no room for privacy. The duty is always to a universal comprehensive plan; no exceptions allowed.

While I'm not the most prosperous person in the world, I don't want anybody to take care of me; the very idea insults my dignity. If I was so incapacitated that things had to come to this, I'd rather receive the help of family and friends than being a number in the cold aseptic hands of a government bureaucracy.

Alexander Herzen is the best antidote to the collectivist ethos:

"If only people wanted, instead of saving the world, to save themselves-- instead of liberating humanity, to liberate themselves, they would do much for the salvation of the world and the liberation of man."
