The number of politicians, of all stripes, that are utterly clueless about the market system is worrisome. How markets do/don't function; the economic history of the U.S.; the importance of social capital and institutions in creating private wealth; the dependence of private sector innovation on public sector subsidies & protections; these are all vital to understand in creating a sustainable & prosperous economy.
I'm not exactly an expert, but even here in the cheap seats, I can tell the players the coach has on the field right now isn't gonna last long in the big leagues.
